Over-policed and underserved communities need economic and social empowerment, not incarceration. In schools, students are penalized instead of mentored and educated. In courtrooms, offenders receive harsh sentences and no offer of rehabilitation. In jails and prisons, those preparing for release don’t receive the supports they need to productively re-enter society. When it comes to the problem of mass incarceration, prevention may trump treatment.
Bring your experiences and ideas about how best to reverse the impact of mass incarceration to Unlikely Allies November 23rd, at 6:30 pm. We’ll discuss the underlying issues of mass incarceration and how we can attack the problem by being proactive in providing access to resources, including education, employment, and community supports. There will be refreshments, resources from community organizations working on this issue, networking opportunities, and a hands on activity with OpenIDEO DC to think through next steps and possible solutions.
